Baltica 2 substation platforms achieved new milestone

A significant milestone was celebrated on 27 Nov 2024 as the Semco Maritime and PTSC Mechanical & Construction (PTSC M&C) consortium hosted the First-Cut Ceremony for the substation platforms of the Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm at PTSC M&C’s fabrication yard in Vung Tau City, Vietnam. This event marked the official start of the fabrication phase for critical infrastructure in the Baltica 2 OWF project, one of the largest offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea and the whole Europe. The ceremony was attended by key representatives from JV partners - Ørsted and PGE Semco Maritime, PTSC M&C, PTSC Corporation, and other project stakeholders. Senior executives from the involved companies, alongside local government officials and key partners, gathered to commemorate this milestone and reaffirm their commitment to delivering this landmark renewable energy project.

The First-Cut Ceremony for Baltica 2 - Substation Platforms at PTSC M&C’s Fabrication Yard in Vung Tau City (Vietnam) on 27th November 2024

Baltica Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) is one of the largest offshore wind projects in the world, planned for development in the Polish section of the Baltic Sea. It will also be Poland’s largest renewable energy initiative to date. The Baltica 2 OWF, the first phase of the Baltica OWF, will have a capacity of approximately 1.5GW and is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2027. The project is being developed by a joint venture between the Polish energy utility Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) and Ørsted A/S, a global leader in renewable energy.
The consortium of Semco Maritime and PTSC M&C is responsible for the engineering, procurement, and fabrication of four (4) 375 MW offshore substation platforms (OSS) and four (4) module support frames for the Baltica 2 OWF. The primary structures for the Baltica 2 substation platforms will be fabricated at PTSC M&C’s yard in Vung Tau City, a key port city in southern Vietnam. These structures play a critical role in safely and efficiently transmitting energy generated by offshore turbines to the national grid. The First-Cut Ceremony marks the start of the fabrication process, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.

Mr. Ulrik Lange, Managing Director of Baltica 2 project, Ørsted, said:

It’s very meaningful to be gathered here today together with PGE, PTSC M&C and SEMCO Maritime representatives to celebrate the first cut of steel for the future offshore wind farm Baltica 2. This important milestone brings us closer to delivering Poland’s largest-ever renewable energy project – an offshore wind farm that will produce enough green energy to cover the power consumption of approximately 2.4 million Polish households. We commit to collaborate closely with PTSC M&C and SEMCO Maritime in this project, to ensure the highest safety and quality delivery of work that are fundamentals of our business and sustainability ambition.

Mr. Bartosz Fedurek, CEO, PGE Baltica of PGE Group, added:

This symbolic ceremony marks fabrication start of OSS for Baltica 2 and is yet another sign that we are moving towards starting construction at our offshore site. What is important is the fact that there are also Polish manufacturing companies involved in cooperation with PTSC M&C and SEMCO Maritime, which makes delivery of four offshore substations for Baltica 2 a truly international supply operation.

Mr. To Ngoc Tu, Managing Director of PTSC M&C, commented:

The First-Cut Ceremony marks a significant milestone for the Baltica 2 Project. Let us continue to uphold the spirit of creativity, diligence, and persistent work to deliver the project with absolute safety, the highest quality, and adherence to schedule. PTSC M&C’s Board of Directors commit to providing timely support, fostering morale, and ensuring well-deserved benefits for everyone involved in this project.
It is a tremendous honor to work for a truly visionary client and collaborate with our great partners at PTSC M&C. We are pleased to have reached this important milestone, which marks the beginning of the construction phase. As we progress with construction, our consortium will continue to uphold the highest standards of safety and quality until completion” says Mr. Pieter Thomasson, Vice President APAC of Semco Maritime.

The collaboration between Ørsted and PGE, Semco Maritime, and PTSC M&C highlights the growing expertise and capacity within the offshore wind sector. The Baltica 2 OSS Project serves as a showcase of cross-border cooperation and technological innovation, placing the consortium at the forefront of the global transition to green energy. This project also marks the third successful collaboration between Semco Maritime and PTSC M&C in approaching, bidding, and executing offshore substation platform projects. The partnership continues to actively pursue opportunities in OSS projects, further leveraging their effective cooperation.
