First-Cut Ceremony marks a major milestone for Lac Da Vang Project

A significant milestone was celebrated today as Murphy Cuu Long Bac Oil Co, Ltd. (MCB) and PTSC Mechanical & Construction (PTSC M&C) held the First-Cut Ceremony for the fabrication of the Lac Da Vang – A Platform at PTSC M&C’s Fabrication Yard in Vung Tau City (Vietnam).  MCB is a subsidiary of Murphy Oil Corporation (Murphy), a highly respected US exploration and production company.

The First Cut Ceremony for Lac Da Vang – A Platform at PTSC M&C’s Fabrication Yard in Vung Tau City (Vietnam) on 16th Oct 2024

This momentous occasion represents the official start of the construction phase for the platform, which will be installed at Block 15-1/05 of the Cuu Long Basin on the Southeast continental shelf of Vietnam, approximately 120 km east of Vung Tau City to support the Lac Da Vang Oil Field Development Project, operated by MCB. The First-Cut Ceremony was attended by senior executives from Murphy’s US headquarters; key Block 15-1/05 stakeholders Petrovietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP), SK Earthon; representatives from the US Consulate, PetroVietnam, PTSC Corporation, MCB, PTSC M&C, Subcontractors and project teams from both companies.  The initial Lac Da Vang Phase 1A development includes a central complex platform (Lac Da Vang - A Platform), which processes crude oil to meet export quality standards and then exports it to the crude oil export pipeline, directing to the infield FSO for storage and subsequent offloading.
PTSC M&C is the main contractor responsible for the completed Detailed Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Transportation, Installation, Hook-up & Commissioning (EPCIC) of the Lac Da Vang - A Platform, following the contract being awarded on 31st May 2024. The Lac Da Vang - A Platform comprises topsides with two modules and a flare boom, weighing over 6,000 Metric Tons, along with a jacket and piles weighing more than 4,500 metric tons. The ceremonial cutting of the first steel signifies the beginning of the structural fabrication process, which is expected to complete the offshore installation by third quarter 2026.
Lac Da Vang underscores the first offshore project developed by Murphy in Vietnam and also the first collaboration between the US operator with PTSC M&C in term of project development. The Lac Da Vang - A Platform Project once again proves the capability and also confirms PTSC M&C’s position in the Oil & Gas service sector, not only for the Vietnamese market but also to demonstrate the ability to satisfy complex standards and requirements from international operators. Mr. Roger Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer of Murphy Oil Corporation, commented at the ceremony: “We are excited to commemorate this moment. We are also excited for what this means for our partnership with PVEP and SK Earthon, as we are now moving toward the first oil milestone which we have all been waiting for. We will continue to work together with PTSC M&C in order to execute a safe and efficient operation and strive to deliver this significant energy infrastructure project to all of our stakeholders, including Vietnam and its people.”
Mr. To Ngoc Tu, Managing Director of PTSC M&C, said: “The First-Cut Ceremony marks a significant milestone for the Lac Da Vang Project. This project holds particular significance as Murphy Oil’s first project in Vietnam and marks our inaugural collaboration among parties. For PTSC M&C, it also represents a pivotal step in advancing our detailed engineering capabilities for central processing platform. This is not only important for the growth of Vietnamese engineers but also aligns with PTSC MC leadership’s strategy to strengthen our EPCI expertise and bolster our competitiveness in both regional and global markets”.
